Home-made Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is one of the best sources of healthy fats and other beneficial nutrients. Unfortunately, most of the commercial peanut butter products at your local supermarket are not healthy at all. Most manufacturers will add hydrogenated oil (Preservative and stabilizer) and even sugar. The good news is peanut butter is one of the easiest home recipes and it tastes much better than the commercial one. What’s more, you can make yours even healthier by adding Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Benefits (a few of so many): Peanuts are a great source of mono-unsaturated fatty acids, magnesium, niacin (brain food) and vitamin E Extra Virgin Olive Oil has healthy dose of mono-unsaturated fatty acids that help in maintaining healthy blood cholesterol levels, lowers risks of high blood pressures and is beneficial in preventing blocked arteries. Ingredients: Raw peanuts Extra Virgin Olive oil (Mechanically expressed) Sea salt Method Roast the raw peanuts over a pan at low heat. There is no need to put any oil as the peanuts won’t stick to the pan with the peels on. Dry-roast this for about 10 min. The peanuts should taste cooked but soft. Turn off the heat and leave peanuts covered in the hot pan to allow drying off and hardening The dried and crunchy nut should now be easy to peel off the skin (If the nuts are really clean, you may leave this part out) Once the nuts are all peeled, put in the blender with the grinder blades option and add some sea salt to your taste. Blend the nuts to a coarseness of your liking (either crunchy or smooth peanut butter). Pour the peanut flour into a glass container and add Extra Virgin Olive Oil in small quantities as you mix until you acquire a good consistency that will allow you to spread the peanut butter.

Kenya

Situated on the Eastern coast of Africa, set astride the Equator and bisected from North to South by the Great Rift Valley, Kenya covers a total area of 580,530 square kilometers, including 13,395 sq. km of inland water. Its Indian Ocean coastline stretches for 480 km.. Nairobi, the capital of the country, is a colourful striking city 500 km inland from Mombasa, the major port on the Indian Ocean. Official languages are Swahili and English.
With an estimated population of more than 30 millions people, this country gained full independence on 12th December 1963 and was admitted to the United Nations four days later. In 1964, the country became a sovereign republic within the Commonwealth, with Mzee Jomo Kenyatta as its first president. He remained in office until his death in 1978 when President Daniel Arap Moi was elected leader of the Nation.
For the traveller Kenya is an enchanting country because few places in the world can better its varied touristic attractions. The overwhelming appeal of the wildlife sanctuaries, glorious beaches, breathtaking scenery in a vast and unspoilt land, an almost perfect climate, sophisticated accommodation and a hospitable happy people.
Kenya contains almost every known land form from true glacial ice to arid desert, mountain massifs to rich savannahs, large lakes and dense forest: Mount Kenya (5,199 m.) with its breathless snow capped peaks stands sentinel above rolling grassland plains and the fascinating semideserts are much further to the North; Lake Victoria, the first lake to be discovered and largest in Africa; Lake Turkana now known as the "Cradle of Mankind"; the Indian Ocean coast, a place of white sandy beaches, turquoise seas and archaeological antiquities...
Above all are the wildlife sanctuaries: the 25 National Parks, devoted to the absolute protection of the indigenous flora and fauna; the 29 National Reserves, where wildlife coexist from time immemorial in perfect harmony with the pastoral nomadic tribes ... These wild and lovely places vary in the abundance and variety of their animals, in scenery, in climate and altitude; from the famous savannah of Masai Mara to the ornithological paradise of Lake Nakuru.
Variations in altitude and terrain create contrasts in the climate: from the hot and humid coast to the fresh, sometimes frosty mornings of the central highlands and the dry burning heat of the northern desert; however, overall, it is seldom harsh, neither too hot nor too cold with long sun filled days.
In almost every part of Kenya there are hotels which hold their own with any in the world. Many, like the famous Treetops, the Norfolk in Nairobi and Mount Kenya Safari Club are internationally know. Some are architectural masterpieces, some are tented camps, true luxury in the bush. All have one common aim, to offer the best in comfort, quality and service in true safari style.

A pleasant City in the Sun, Nairobi, the Capital City of Kenya and a safari world hub is just south of the Equator at an altitude of 1,675 m. The city, was born in the spirit of adventure in the days of the early pioneers, less than a Century ago. Began as an insignificant jumble of tents and ox wagons beside the Uganda Railhead, which halted here 500 km inland from the coast to gather steam for the way ahead. The good climate and the abundance of water made it grow quickly, becoming one of the most important and vibrant cities of Africa. Nairobi enjoys an almost perfect, healthy climate: warm sunny cloudless days with the temperature seldom rising above 25 C and cooler nights. With amalgamation of races and cultures, it hosts a population of almost 3 million people..
A city of great contrast, strikingly modern with tall imposing buildings, yet reminders of the early days are there. Look for the Law Courts and Parliament Buildings; Railway Station and Museum, with its steam locomotives so emotive of a more romantic age; Jamia Mosque; the City Market with its arrays of tropical fruits and flowers; the famous Norfolk Hotel, linked with Kenya´s history since 1904; Kenyatta Conference Centre built in 1983; the National Museum, founded in 1910, with its unique collections so relevant to Kenya´s early history and the prehistory of mankind; the Karen Blixen Museum, outside the city, a memorial to a woman admired both for her writing and her spirit; the Bomas of Kenya, the nation´s cultural centre where it is possible to watch a vivid display of tribal dancing in a rural lovely setting ...
Throughout the country and specially in Nairobi shopping is an absorbing pastime. Look around first, there is so much on offer: wood carvings and traditional handcrafts; sensuous soapstone from Kisii; colorful sisal mats; "kiondos", the famous Kenya bags; "kangas" and "kikois", traditionally worn by women and these days used as tablecloths or beach wraps; batiks, as the silk ones printed by Heidi Lange or Robin Anderson ... Also two gem stones originate in this part of Africa: the blue Tanzanite and the vivid green Tsavorite.
Visitors to Nairobi will be pleasantly surprised by the quality of the hotels in and around the city. All are well appointed with spacious rooms, most have swimming pools and the service is friendly and attentive. Most of the leading hotels offer gourmet, a la carte dining in sophisticated grill rooms. For visitors who wish to dine out the choice is appealing: the Tamarind, with superb seafood from the Indian Ocean; the Ibis Grill, in the Norfolk Hotel, an exceptional meal for a special occasion; the Carnivore, famous for its exotic game meats ...
THE KENYA COAST
480 km of vast uninterrupted white sand beaches, fringed with palms, casuarinas, oleanders and brilliant bougainvillaea, washed by the incredible sparkling blue waters of an opal Indian Ocean, refreshed by gentle monsoon breezes, makes the Kenya coast one of the most idyllic resort areas anywhere in the world.
The tropical coastline of East Africa has been recognized by historians for a thousand years, from Ptolemy to the Turks, from the Arabs to the Portuguese who took Mombasa in the 16th Century. They stayed for over a century, building Fort Jesus, eventually being starved by the Arabs.
In the North and South coast stand some of Kenya´s finest hotels, nestling in cleared beach front areas, offering a very wide variety of watersports and activities.
The Kisite Marine Park, almost at the Tanzania border, an intriguing underwater world, can be reached from Shimoni or Wasini Island in a lovely dhow trip. In the North, Nyali, Bamburi, Shanzu and Kikambala are a paradise of sand and bright blue sea, with its calm unruffled water.

MOMBASA
Situated on the East Coast, along the Indian Ocean beach and being the second largest City of the country, its the largest and most popular island on the Kenya coast.
This old but vibrant gateway to Kenya is a mystical mixture of ancient and modern, with a cosmopolitan population blending Africa, Arabia and Asia. But not everyone realizes that this picturesque port is an island with two deep water harbors. Evocative of the east, graceful sailing dhows unchanged throughout the centuries, arrive on the monsoon winds, while ocean liners berth just around the headland. Fringing the dhow harbor is the Old Town, dominated by the ancient Portuguese Fort Jesus, a maze of narrows streets overshadowed by high ornamental balconies of quaint shuttered houses and vibrant open bazaars.
MALINDI
A time gem, dating back to the 9th Century with Arab occupation from the 13th Century onwards. Malindi is a rich trading centre with early contacts with near East and Arabic influence for more than 500 years, Malindi is now a popular beach destination.
18kms south of the ancient town, surrounded by the Sokokwe Forest, is situated the lost City of Gedi whose inhabitants inexplicably vanished over 300 years ago.
Two marine national parks with wonderful underwater coral gardens and thousands of tropical fish, secluded curved bays with incredible beaches that defy description.
LAMU
Dreamt of a deserted tropical Island in the sun? that’s Lamu. Its one of the earliest Arab settlements along the Coast. Lamu has preserved her architecture and a tempo reminiscent of the 18th Century. This swahili town, last remaining bastion of the Shirazi, the oldest of the cultures on this coast, is a delightful anachronism carrying on its daily life as it has for centuries.
There are beautiful beaches, a wonderful underwater world along the reefs in the Kiunga Marine National Park and two remote hideaways on Kiwayu and islands.

Parks In Kenya

MASAI MARA NATIONAL PARK
Referred to as the highlight of the game viewing in East Africa, and needless to point in the world!! Maasai Mara is situated in the heart of the Great Rift Valley, with an area of 1,812 sq. km, limited to the East by the Talek river and Loita plains, Masai Mara, Kenya´s leading Game Reserve, lies on the border between Kenya and Tanzania and is the northern extension to the renowned Serengeti plain.
A reserve of breathless vistas, a panorama of vast rolling plains, hills and woodland groves, well watered by the Mara River, concentrating in its proximities permanent populations of wildlife: this is lion, leopard, cheetah and elephant country, with buffalo lurking in the forest and a superb abundance of plains game: zebras, Thompson and Grant gazelles, topis ... But all this richness is secondary to the Mara main attraction: the annual migration, which takes place between July and September. Over a million wildebeest, more than two hundred thousand zebra with their attendant predators cross the Mara River and spread across the plains in a seemingly endless procession. This annual seasonal migration has attracted a “ritual” fluctuations of visitors to this part of the world to catch this great spectacle. LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK
An ornithological paradise and considered one of the country’s most beautiful National Park, Lake Nakuru National Park boasts a total area of 368 sq. km, its home for more than 450 different kinds of birds, Lake Nakuru is one of the finest ornithological sights in the world, famous haunt of thousand of flamingoes which feed on the algae in the 40 cm deep lake. This beautiful shallow alkaline lake, just south of Nakuru town, is surrounded by acacia woodland and rich savannah.
Superb example of conservation at work in the wild, it is now, with the assistance of the World Wildlife Foundation, providing sanctuary for Rothschild Giraffe, Black and White Rhino and Leopard who live in perfect harmony in this aquatic landscape. The edge of the lake is frequently a crimson ribbon of Greater and Lesser Flamingoes, while pelicans and other water birds swim and fish in majestic flotilla formation. SAMBURU, BUFFALO SPRINGS AND SHABA NATIONAL RESERVES
Located on the semi-arid Northern Kenya, in the pastoral Samburu country, the three remote Reserves: Samburu, and the adjacent Shaba & Buffallo Springs National Reserves are rugged, hosting same faunal structure. These wildlife reserves, with a total area of 428 sq. km, lie just within the fascinating semi-desert Northern Frontier District of Kenya.
The tranquil Uaso Nyiro River, flowing through Shaba and Samburu, attract a wide number of rare wildlife and provides a natural habitat for crocodile. Long necked gerenuk, Grevy´s zebra and reticulated giraffe are species not found in the less arid areas to the south. Elephant seek solace and contentment in the shallow waters of this wide sauntering river, fringed with acacia, down palms and tamarind, which together with Buffalo Springs, support a large variety of african mammals, cheetah and leopard being particularly well represented. Doves and guinea fowl abound and the giant Martial Eagle perched on some high vantage point.
The past volcanic intensity of the area is demonstrated by the formidable lava flow at the southern end of Shaba (its name comes from a cone of volcanic rock).
With a magnificent background of jagged, purple mountains, a safari in these small gems in the wildlife wilderness, will provide some of the best and most colorful game viewing in the country.

MOUNT KENYA NATIONAL PARK
Mount Kenya National Park is home to the highest Mountain in the Country, Mount Kenya, with its snow-capped peaks 5,199 m. high, Its slopes are covered with rich deciduous and bamboo forests and open high altitude moorland just below the glaciers and snowfields. Here, abundant wildlife resident within the thick forest and includes bigger mammals like elephant, buffalo, even lion, with several species of antelope and other smaller animals too. The floral structure of this area is unique and stratified into zones as you ascend to the higher altitude mountain, which has always been a great attraction to botanist. Numerous Mountain Climbing packages are offered from the base Lodges within the foothills of Mount Kenya, making the area a hiking destination. THE ABERDARE NATIONAL PARK
The Aberdares, a beautiful mountain range in the central highlands of Kenya where icy rivers plunge in glorious cascades and waterfalls, is considered the life blood of Kenya being the source of the waters feeding millions of populations down streams. It’s a place of dense forest, misty moorlands and alpine plants.
The park boasts 766 sq. km of the area which got rich wildlife species. The Salient stretching out towards the nearby town of Nyeri, was once an elephant migration corridor, although not in use by these giants of jungle, the animals remain within the park together with buffalo and a wide variety of antelope, giant forest hog, the elusive bongo, rhino, lions and hyenas. Tacazze and Malachite Sunbird, Mountain Buzzard and African Goshawk are found in this area where the birdlife is abundant and varied. AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK
This seasonal swamp of 3,810 sq. km, is one of the finest areas in the country for big game photography, attracting a vast population of wildlife. The landscape, with its parched alkaline pan and strange mirages, is everywhere dominated by the glistening majestic snowcap of Mount Kilimanjaro on the back ground, a extinct volcano of 5,894 m. known as the "roof of Africa".
This is Maasai country, a proud nomadic people, who have lived in harmony with nature for centuries. Game viewing is an adventure in this park, with lion, cheetah and buffalo almost an assured sight and hosts of antelope, zebra and other small creatures of the wild. Bird life is abundant. But the most impressive inhabitants of this arid landscape are the elephants, moving in large columns in their daily peregrination to the water. TSAVO NATIONAL PARK
Forming one of the world´s largest game parks is the combined area of Tsavo East and West National Parks, together with the adjoining private sanctuary of Taita. A model national park in layout, geophysical, animal and plant diversity, situated midway between Nairobi and Mombasa.
This starkly beautiful park suffered considerable deprivation both in physical damage and animal loss in the 1970´s, but this is now well past, and today the park is thriving once more. The many natural wonders in this harsh countryside include the fascinating Mzima Springs a marvelous eruption of underground crystal waters arising in the Chyulu Hills from Mount Kilimanjaro, reaching the surface to form clear pools, a heaven for a rich wildlife pageant.
The wildlife in this park includes herds of elephant and prides of lion. Less common species include fringed-eared oryx, klipspringer, striped hyena and caracal.
South of the park is a private sanctuary with lovely lakes and waterholes, which ensures an exciting variety of animals at all times of the year. Weaver birds and their fascinating nests are found throughout the park, as are Fisher´s starling, hornbills and parrots. LAKE BOGORIA NATIONAL PARK
Probably the most geologically rich National Park in Kenya, Lake Bogoria is like a boiling pot with fuming hot springs and continuous fountains of geysers, jutting from the earth surface. It’s own Lake Bogoria, is a rich bird Santuary with thousands of flamingoes and pelican in addition to other bird species. The park also host animal life mostly grazers population, baboons among others.

Tanzania

Tanzania is situated below the Equator and is bordered by shimmering lakes and the Indian Ocean, from Mount Kilimanjaro in the North to Mozambique in the South. Best described as a kaleidoscope of landscape, wildlife and people, and East Africa´s best kept secret. It has an area of 939,701 sq. km., Its landscapes varies from the green tropical 800 km of coastline, with silver sand, coral reefs and mangrove swamps, to the beige semidesert of the central plateau, the eternal snow of the northern mountains and the savannah of the largest and best game reserves in the world.
Tanzania has an amazing infinite variety from Wildlife, landscape, culture the green islands of Pemba, Zanzibar and Mafia.
Over a quarter of Tanzania is made up of National Parks, game reserves, and controlled areas. In the North, the remarkable Serengeti plains support over three million animals; further east is Ngorongoro Crater, an inequalable caldera which reveals on its floor a magic world teeming with animals; nearby, Lake Manyara at the foot of the Rift Valley is a bird watchers paradise. Tanzania has 53,000 sq. km. of inland water. Lake Tanganyika is Africa´s deepest and longest fresh water lake. In the north-west, Lake Victoria, the second largest on earth, lies in a huge shallow depression.
But above all, at 5,895 m, there is mighty Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, which rises majestically out of the dusty bush of the northern Masai Steppe. Its densely forested sides give way to the blue glaciers and unbelievably white snow of its rounded peak. Parks In Tanzania

MOUNT KILIMANJARO
Discovered by Johannes Rebmann in 1848, Mount Kilimanjaro is a beautiful great shining mountain of 5,895m always bearing a glittering mantle of snow. The highest mountain in Africa is also a national park which extends from mountain rain forest to scrub and alpine moorland and finally snow and ice fields at the summit. NGORONGORO
Indisputably one of Africa´s true wonders of nature and an extraordinary place of haunting beauty, with its grand majestic mountain ring and lake, Ngorongoro, an active volcano some 8 million years ago, covers an area of 264 sq. km and is the largest intact caldera in the world.
Approaching Ngorongoro Crater is a unique experience. The road winds upwards through a beautiful area of tropical rainforest and meadows carpeted with wild flowers. Its enduring charm stems from its overwhelming physical beauty and the abundance of wildlife permanently resident on the crater floor. LAKE MANYARA
Set around a shallow alkaline lake, surrounded by ancient baobabs, ground water forest of fig and mahogany and open grasslands, this park lies at the foot of a dramatic escarpment, offering a rich diversity of scenery and wildlife.
Considered as one of Tanzania´s most attractive game sanctuaries, it is home for the famous tree climbing lions. Birdlife is prolific, and a very high density of elephant population coexist with buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and other big game. SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
With 14,500 sq kms., the Serengeti plain is undoubtedly the most famous wildlife sanctuary in the world, unequalled for its natural beauty and the greatest concentration of plains game anywhere. It lies between the shores of Lake Victoria in the east and the Maasai Mara to the north west.
Serengeti is renown for its black-maned lion and other predators including wild dog, spotted hyena, jackal, cheetah and leopard. The wealth of birdlife is of a special interest including colourful rollers, bee-eaters, kingfishers and sunbirds and a large number of birds of prey.
During May and June, Lake Ndutu at the foot of the Ngorongoro highlands, is the starting point for one of the great natural wonders of nature - the famous annual migration. Nearly 2 million wildebeests and a quarter of a million zebra move in winding columns several miles in length towards the Maasai Mara.

Essentials

CLIMATE
If there is a perfect climate in the world, surely it is in East Africa. Although it can be hot and sticky by the sea, inland the air is dry and even at midday, the temperatures are equitable. Due to the proximity to the equator, sunrise occurs daily between 06.00hrs and 06.30hrs while sunset takes place 12 hours later. It can get quite chilly in the early morning and evening hence visitors should pack a sweater. Each time of year has its special attractions. There are two main rainy seasons - usually mid-April to the end of May and November to mid-December. Even during the rains, the weather can be pleasant with rain occurring in the early morning and late in the afternoon or evening. VISA AND HEALTH REGULATIONS
Visitors must be in possession of valid visa and health documentation on arrival. The regulations vary dependent on nationality and country of origin and should be checked with the nearest tourist office or diplomatic mission. Inoculation centres in the country of origin will provide updated information and advice on health regulations and recommendations (Yellow fever certificate are not mandatory for Travel into Tanzania or Kenya unless a visitor is coming from an area where this is endemic. Anti-malaria medication is however recommended for a visit to either country. Please consult your doctor for this. CUSTOMS AND EXIT REGULATIONS
Personal effects, film and cameras may be imported temporarily free of duty. However professional video equipment, tape recorders, radios, musical instruments and souvenirs from other countries may require a customs bond to ensure re-exportation. Firearms need a special permit which must be obtained in advance. Baggage is normally inspected by customs officials on arrival and departure.
Please strictly adhere to baggage limitations as advised by the airline as excess baggage charges can be quite expensive. AIRPORT DEPARTURE TAX
International Airport departure tax equivalent to US$. 30 per person is payable on departure from Tanzania whilst the one for Kenya (US$ 20) which is normally included on the ticket. Zanzibar departure tax is US$ 25 per person, payable direct. A local airport service charge is also payable on departure for domestic. As this varies from country to country, please check with us on the prevailing amounts payable prior to your flight departure. CURRENCY
There is no restriction to the amount of foreign currency a visitor may import provided that it is exchanged through authorized dealers only. Well known credit cards are widely accepted in Kenya, but to a lesser extent in Tanzania. U.S. dollars and travellers cheques are the most widely accepted form of payment. It is a legal offence to deface local currency.
Banking hours
Banks in Nairobi and other large towns open from 9am-3pm Monday to Friday and 9am-11am on the first and last Saturday of each month.
24 hours access to your account can be facilitated by the 70 ATMs countrywide. Barclays Bank has over 40 `Barclaycash` ATMs located within the cities of Nairobi and Mombasa; and other major towns.
Banks in Mombasa and the coastal areas open and close half an hour earlier. Some banks at the international airports open round the clock every day as do the new foreign exchage bureaux. SECURITY
Normal precautions as in any other destination worldwide should be taken. Keep a close watch on handbags, wallets and cameras when walking in crowded places and avoid walking at night (take a taxi). Place all valuables in safety deposit boxes at hotels and lodges and only carry small amounts of cash. Wear as little jewelry as possible, if any, and never leave valuables on show in an unattended car or tour bus. Taking photographs at airports, near military installations, of policemen, the President, the national flag, the State House, state lodges, soldiers, prisons and prisoners etc., is prohibited. Before photographing local people, permission should be obtained and a fixed price agreed. Seek the assistance of your driver/guide in this matter. HOTEL CHECK-IN/CHECK-OUT
The standard check-out time is 10.00hrs hence rooms may not normally be ready for occupancy until 12.00hrs. Should an early arrival be anticipated, please reserve rooms from the preceding night. Day rooms up to 18.00hrs are usually available.
Hotel extras bill payment
Most hotels expect visitors to pay in convertible foreign currency, such as US dollars. However, in some establishments, visitors may have the option to pay in Kenya shillings in Kenya & Tanzania Shilling in Tanzania or credit card if this method is preferred. DRIVING
Driving is on the left for all countries. CLOTHING
Safari clothing should be casual and comfortable. Cotton slacks and shirts, with skirts and culottes for ladies and a light sweater or jacket, during the day. Evening wear in game lodges and safari camps can be very casual. In the more sophisticated clubs and hotels gentlemen will be required to wear a jacket and possibly a tie, while ladies should dress rather more formally. At high altitudes, where early mornings and evenings can be very chilly, warm sweaters, socks and comfortable shoes are recommended. Pack suntan lotion, swimwear (to be reserved for the beach and pool only), a small first aid kit, a flashlight and an alarm clock. Local customs and modesty should be respected. LAUNDRY
Most hotels, game lodges and safari camps offer a 24-hour inexpensive laundry service. TELEPHONE SERVICES
Telkom Kenya provides advanced telecommunication services that include voice data, internet, and multimedia, whilst cellular mobile services are provided by safaricom and kencell communications.
Faxes, telexes and emails can be sent from your hotel via the operator. international calls can sometimes be dialed direct or operator assisted by dialing 0195 or 0916. Telkom Kenya also run a few international public assisted call offices in selected areas in major towns.
Public payphones are fully automated. Simply pick up the handset and follow the digitalized prompts on the screen to make your call. Card and coin phones are available. Phone cards of different denominations may be bought from post offices or international call offices in major towns. You can also make use of hotel phones but the charges are usually 100% more. Local dialed calls cost a minimum of ksh 4, so have plenty of charge.

Voltage in East Africa is 240volts/50 cycles AC, British standard generally through three-pin square plugs. Some lodges and camps have power only in the early mornings and evenings and, in some, video charging facilities are centralized. LUGGAGE
We strongly recommend that luggage is limited to one piece per person. A small overnight bag is essential. All city hotels provide secure storage for left luggage. On all itineraries where journeys by light aircraft are involved, the baggage allowance is 15kgs per person. At Treetops and The Ark only one small overnight bag per person is permitted, secure storage is provided at the Outspan Hotel and Aberdare Country Club. The company accepts no liability for loss of or damage to luggage whilst on safari and clients are strongly recommended to effect personal luggage insurance before leaving home. PHOTOGRAPHY
There is no shortage of the more usual film throughout Kenya, however it is expensive and visitors are advised to bring plentiful of supplies, especially where specialist film is concerned. As a general guide, double the amount of film normally needed in other areas. In Tanzania films may not be available. For wildlife photography a 35mm single reflex camera, with telephoto lens of 200mm to 300mm is recommended. Larger lenses which require a tripod, or double reflex cameras are generally impractical. An ultra violet filter, waterproof dust cover and spare batteries are essential. A pair of good quality binoculars for each person will be a great asset. EAST AFRICAN WILDLIFE SOCIETY
For a small sum, we can enroll your clients as members of this society. They will receive an annual subscription of Swara, the Society's monthly magazine together with an attractive pin and membership certificate. As Kenya and Tanzania enjoy a healthy, invigorating climate, visitors need feel no concern for their general health during their stay. All prices are to be in US$ unless where otherwise advised Local & regional flights between Parks and cities are provided on small aircrafts in both Kenya and Tanzania with a maximum baggage allowance of 15Kg per person (preferably in soft bags not hard cases). Excess baggage is charged at the prevailing freight rate and its strictly subject to space availability. On some sectors with multiple airstrips in one Park/Reserve or along the same route, same aircraft is utilised to drop clients to other Lodges/Camps en-route. Similarly, on return leg the aircraft does pick clients from the other Lodges/Camps en-route. Although the standard schedule timing is strictly observed, the flight can be re-routed to start dropping at other airstrips dependant on where most clients on that flight are destined. This is however at the discretion of the carrier airline and clients are briefed prior to take off. Transportation: transfers in the cities and for road safaris is provided for in a custom built 07-seater safari minibuses (07 window seats). The vehicles have pop-up roof hatches for enhanced game viewing and photography. In all the programmes where the game drives & air strip transfers are provided for by a Lodge/Camp, this service is undertaken on a non-exclusive (per seat-in-car) basis, usually in a 4x4 vehicle with services of an English speaking driver/guide. Hotels, Lodges and Tented Camps only guarantee use of rooms after 12.00 hours (pm) on the day of arrival. Prior to this time, room occupancy is subject to availability. Use of room is limited up to 10.00 hrs (am) in all Hotels, Lodges and Tented Camps, unless prior arrangements are made with the reception for a day room or for an extension of check-out timings. At the Treetops Lodge, the bathroom and toilet facilities are communal, for use by guests accommodated in the standard rooms. The standard rooms in the lodge do not have double beds. The Treetops Lodge has 02 suites (one of which has a double bed) with en suite bathrooms and toilets. A professional Multi-lingual tour escort can be provided on request for safaris. However, this will be at a supplement cost of US$ 100 per day, in addition to cost of his/her accommodation in a single room and scheduled flights where applicable as per the clients program. The following services are not usually included on the safari prices: visas fees, airport taxes for international departures, gratuities and tips, laundry, drinks-unless those and where advised per itinerary (apart from treated drinking water available in some rooms) and any other item not specified in the itinerary. The standard child policy in properties in East Africa is that: children aged 02 to 12 years pays 50% of adult rates in accommodation & park entrance fees when sharing a room with 02 full paying adults (i.e in 3rd bed). Should the child under 12 years share own room or with 01 adult, full adult rate will apply for accommodation, nevertheless, the under 12 years still get a child discount on park entrance fees. When an itinerary includes a night in Nairobi, this can be taken either on the first day or on the last day, whichever is more fitted to the clients’ flight schedules. Over the Festive seasons (Easter, Christmas/New year), Hotels/Lodges do charge supplements. The actual dates & supplement however do vary per property. Usually Christmas & New Year Supplements are applicable from Dec 16th to January 8th . of the preceding year. Easter Supplements are also applicable over the Easter weekend (April 14th to 17th), these supplements are to be advised upon quotation / booking request. The timings for game viewing drives in the various National Parks, Reserves & Ranches are dependant on the hours of light, and are designed to be as enjoyable as possible. The number of game drives in a night stop is specified as per the itinerary. The standard times for game drives are as follows: Dawn game drive: between 0630 hrs – 0830 hrs. Morning game drive: Between 0730 hrs – 0930 hrs and a late afternoon game viewing drive: between 1600 hrs to 1800 hrs. Some Lodges/camps may provide a mid-morning game drive: between 1000 hrs to 1200 hrs or an alternative of applicable local activities, these are indicated on the itineraries where applicable. Provisions for “short game drive en-route” are offered when there is no sufficient time to do a full game viewing drive as defined above. This can be either due to a early departure requirement or late arrival owing to a long drive to the next night stop or from last night stop respectively. In Aberdares & Mount Kenya National Parks, game viewing is normally done from the Tree Lodges precincts, where animals are seen at the adjacent water holes. Salient game drives can be arranged in Aberdares on clients request and at an additional cost. Standard Terms and Conditions of services as per our (Top Notch Luxury Travel Ltd) contract shall apply and are available in a separate page on this site or on request.

High Energy Peanut Butter Chocolate Bars - Recipe

Nuts are great tasting and loaded with proteins, vitamins (vitamins E, B2, B3), minerals (magnesium, manganese, selenium, copper) and healthy oils. In addition, we’ll add sweeteners from dates (or raisins) and raw honey. Sugar is sugar (we know) but it’s much better off in its raw form than highly processed. These bars are packed with energy and are good for after a workout or a physically demanding activity. This is a simplified recipe adapted from against all grains Ingredients: 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (not the artificial kind) 4 tablespoons raw honey 1/2 cup natural unsweetened peanut butter (or almond butter) 2 tablespoons coconut oil 2 cups of assorted nuts (hazelnut, almond, walnut, brazilnut, cashewnut, macadamia) – just go nuts! 5 dates (or 10 raisins) 1 cup shredded coconut, unsweetened 2 – 3 table spoons cocoa Procedure Put all the assorted nuts into a food processor and pulse until you have a coarse texture, much like sand. From here, just mix everything up in a large bowl until all ingredients are well incorporated. You should have a gummy mixture. Pack it into a ball shape and place it on a grease-proof paper. Pat it down and shape it into a rectangular block about ½ an inch high. Some good pressure is needed. Fold the grease proof paper neatly over the block to cover it like you would a gift wrapping. Keep in the freezer for about 3 hours. Remove the grease-proof paper and slice into long rectangular shapes Store in the fridge in a zip-lock bag and eat after your workout or during a hike.

Digital Set Top Box

What is a Set-top Box? It’s a receiver that decodes or converts the digital signal to analogue to enable the channels to be displayed on your analogue TV set. This set-top box is connected to your TV set. The DTT set-top box (also referred to as a decoder or converter box) is however not the same as the existing satellite or terrestrial-based pay TV service decoders. Analogue television sets cannot display digital transmissions on their screens without being connected to such a set-top box converter. What does a Set-top Box do? A set top box, when connected to an analogue television set, converts digital signals thereby giving viewers ability to watch these programmes on their ordinary TV sets. Some set top boxes may also provide viewers with datacasting services and video, audio and data enhancements. Set top boxes capable of receiving and displaying a HDTV signal may not be available initially. Set top boxes can provide a picture output to either analogue or digital screen displays.

Processes

Processes are two-fold: organizationwide and project-based. Electro Serve Limited will analyze the current procedures to ensure appropriate processes are established. These processes will enable the PEOPLE to effectively use the available technology.

Signal Migration

Why all countries in the world must Migrate to DTT and when is the deadline?   The Regional Radio communication Conference (RRC) meeting of 2006, in a treaty, set 17th June 2015 as the deadline for all countries to migrate to digital terrestrial television (DTT) broadcasting. It is, therefore, a mandatory for countries. Digital broadcasting will result in more efficient use of the spectrum hence more valuable spectrum can be released and used for other services. The rest of the world is migrating to digital broadcasting and analogue broadcasting will not be protected from interference after 2015.   What is Digital Transition?   Digital transition is the migration from analogue broadcasting to digital broadcasting. Digital broadcasting is transmitted on radio frequencies through terrestrial space in the same way as standard analog television, with the primary difference being the use of multiplex transmitters to allow reception of multiple channels on a single frequency range (such as a UHF or VHF channel) known as sub channels. Analogue television therefore requires a large amount of bandwidth to transmit sound and picture. Digital signals on the other hand require much less bandwidth and can therefore carry more content and provide better quality pictures and sound.

People

Employees are organizations number one asset. By assessing current employees' competencies and/or their work environment, Electro Serve Limited will endeavor to have highly qualified professionals and technical assistants to propel the company to greater heights of success.

Digital TV Advantages

Digital television is a far more efficient and flexible transmission system than the current analogue system. It allows broadcasters to offer viewers a range of new and different services. Digital television features can include:  - Better quality picture and sound information  - Much improved reception capability, including the elimination of ghosting and other transmission errors.  - Flexibility to simultaneously accommodate high definition and standard definition channels, mobile TV and digital audio.  - Improved security to prevent unauthorized persons from receiving services  - Electronic Program Guides (EPGs). A basic EPG can be used by viewers to navigate between channels, identify the currently screening programme and the next programmme ('now and next') on each channel. More sophisticated EPGs can be used to set reminders for program viewing, provide a short synopsis of the content of programs, identify programming in advance for several days, search for programs by genre, and provide access to some enhancements.  - Program enhancements on separate channels to the primary program, e.g., additional camera angles on a sports match, statistics about a player, or additional information about a segment in a lifestyle or magazine program.  - Broadcasters will be allowed to broadcast more than one channel when certain events, such as sporting matches, extend beyond time due to circumstances beyond the broadcasters' control, and overlap a regularly scheduled news program. This will allow viewers the option of continuing to watch the end of the event or the news bulletin.  - Interactive television services and data casting services, including selected Internet services, home shopping, computer games, etc will be provided by broadcasters and data casters.

Solar Power

In addition to Inverter Backup, the system can be upgraded to a Solar Lighting system with the addition of Solar Photo Voltaic (PV) Cells and A charge controller. The PV cells charge the batteries with energy produced by the sun thus no utility company bills (e.g. KPLC) will be charged on any item connected to the Solar Power Systems.
We also provide an option of intelligent charge controllers i.e. Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) controller which optimize the charging of the batteries even in less than ideal conditions.
On our clients request we can carry out a survey on the best configuration for a solar installation that will balance both the clients solar needs and the financial implications of the project.
We also install solar garden lights and street lights

Kenya Seeds of Change

Why does Cookswell Jikos give out free packets of tree seeds?    The current degraded state of Kenya’s national and private forests (and therefore, the overall environmental health of the country) borders on the point of no return. Unless large scale forestry efforts are undertaken by both the public and private sector in the next few years, the damage that has been done to the Nation's forests will become irreversible. Due to the slow pace of natural regeneration of forests (as compared to their exploitation), a boost is sorely needed to meet current and future demands by Kenya’s ever growing population for sustainably grown wood by-products, especially the charcoal and firewood that is used daily by 80% of the country’s population.

The Kenya Seeds Of Change initiative aims to contribute towards national afforestaion by private landowners through the countrywide distribution of inexpensive packets of multi-use indigenous tree seeds and the promotion of direct seeding woodlot establishment. Seeds are by far the most cost effective method of promoting wide scale tree planting in Kenya. These are some of the benefits from the direct planting of tree seeds compared to planting seedlings;

•Seeds are Cheaper! (At roughly 0.25cents per tree compared to 20 shillings per seedling)
•The tree’s hardiness and survivability increases.
•Thousands of seeds can be transported and stored much more easily then thousands of seedlings can until the planting time comes.
•Seeds can be massively disseminated through existing retail outlets/consumer products such as our cookstoves with minimal price increments from producer to consumer. Tree seedlings face problems of availability at the right time, dissemination logistics etc.
•Partially domesticated indigenous tree species are best grown from seed. They are already adapted to Kenya’s climate, soils and pests and the trees are currently widely used and understood by the population.
•Seeds simplify the enhancement of the genetic diversity of planted woodlots.
•The above/below ground biomass ratio is more conducive to healthy growth when a tree is planted from seed.

Limited Access to Good Seed

•From large commercial plantations to small scale rural and urban farmers, the access to purchase certified tree seeds according to their growing zones and uses is extremely limited to anyone who would like to plant trees.
•Currently the only place to buy graded, certified tree seeds is at KEFRI (The Kenya Forestry Research Institute), located in Muguga, on the outskirts of Nairobi or in KEFRI Voi/Kibewzi Station.
The Kenya Seeds of Change initiative has been started to help provide woodfuel users a free opportunity to invest in growing a future source of free energy!

The Species of Trees

The initial focus will be on energy producing trees (solid bio-fuels in the form of charcoal and firewood). The trees from the acacia family are currently the most widely used in Kenya for this purpose (and are in turn some the most over exploited). They comprise primarily these three species;
•Acacia xanthopholea
•Acacia polyacantha
•Acacia nilotica
These trees can not only provide a core energy crop but will also provide the wide positive ecological trickledown effect that tree planting is associated with, i.e. erosion control, bio-diversity, water retention and catchment, bee forage, shade, windbreaks, carbon capture and wildlife/bird habitat etc.
Encouraging the extensive planting of such a useful species of tree is essential in order to lay the foundations for sustainable charcoal/firewood farming, on a national scale. Widespread affordable acacia seeds will be the beginnings of recovery for Kenya’s forests and the transfiguration of the woodfuel supply/demand chain into long term economic and environmental viability.

Successful domestication and widescale cultivation of these acacia species will eventually constitute the final line of defense for the remaining indigenous forest ecosystems in Kenya.

This project will benefit all sectors;

•It will enable our Kenyan customers countrywide to start re-planting, at a negligible cost, trees that can recover damaged land and provide future income security.
•It will stimulate KEFRI to increase seed production which will correlate with increased rural employment and further research into domesticating high yielding multi-use Acacia trees.
•It provides an excellent public relations opening for corporate social investment from major national cookstove manufactures and other industries reliant on increased forest cover; being an integral part of the greening Kenya whilst at the same time doing business as usual.
•It would provide access to seed for developmental organizations, both public and private.
From our research with the Woodlands 2000 Trust, a typical acacia tree growing in arid areas in Kenya, (Narok and Kajiado specifically) can, after about 9 years of growing in the wild, produce 1 pickup load of firewood (2500/=) or after about 11 years produce 3-4 bags of charcoal (at 300/= each).   Each packet of seeds contains an average of 160 seeds and costs about (1$) or 100Ksh each. The investment gained is monetarily huge but pales in comparison to the ecological gains made from tree planting. This is a cheap easy way to recover and enhance what is a vital part of the ecosystem. If all the trees that are being cut down for fuel right now started from seed but were not planted by the hand of man, then just imagine how many trees will grow when carefully nurtured and protected from the goats and the wildlife, the fires and the droughts which compromise the fast and healthy growth of wild trees.

Business Model

Our basic business idea is to gather our potential customers ICT hardware, software and support needs, source and deliver suitable solutions at the most industry competitive standards and value. The key cornerstone of our business will be a thorough understanding of our customer needs. This is in contrast with how most of our competitors approach their business; sourcing (usually at the lowest cost and hence, very often, low quality) and obtaining the available products and services and then pushing them to an undefined market. We will, as accurately and as practically possible, define our customer. We will profile our customer through geographical location, product/service preferences and their key characteristics. Thus we have identified several classes of customers: Home consumers Finance and banking institutions Educational institutions Hospitals Government, private and NGOs Manufacturing industries Information technology Media industry Others

About Us

Cookswell Jikos is a small but growing family owned Kenyan hybrid-business. We provide our customers with the best quality charcoal and wood fueled stoves, portable convection ovens, BBQ's, smokers, space heaters and improved charcoal making kilns. Our products are designed and handcrafted in Kenya by professional Kenyan artisans personally trained by the late great jiko inventor, Dr. Maxwell Kinyanjui.   Cookswell Jikos advocates for the sustainable production, management and utilization of wood fuels as one of the many renewable energy resources for East Africa’s cooking needs.   We proudly include a free packet of KEFRI certified acacia tree seeds with every product purchased to further the goal of helping people make charcoal a sustainable energy source. To add to our renewable biomass energy forestry programs we have established The Woodlands 2000 Trust (https://www.facebook.com/Woodlands2000Trust) with support from the Tamarind Kenya Group https://www.tamarind.co.ke/ to promote dryland commercial agroforestry tree growing around Kenya and East Africa for greater woodfuel security. We also make innovative and simple to use portable, mobile kilns to make your own free charcoal at home from tree branches and twigs or maize cobs, coconut husks and other woody biomass to reduce the demand on traditional charcoal sources.
Please order your new stove or oven and have it delivered to any major town in Kenya. We also have a network of local transport providers for delivery around East Africa and beyond.    We are very happy to announce that we now have our first international export and distribution partner based in The Hague, Nederlands and online at http://www.cookswell.eu  which provides low cost international shipping to any corner of the world!    Save money, Save energy and Eat Well with Cookswell!

Why Lamu

The planned MILHOI CITY is to be built on the mainland directly opposite Lamu Island within the defined limits of the New Lamu Port.  The Free port will be the new hub of economic activities in the region and the rich hinterland nations including South Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia.  The strategic positioning of the Tourism and Golf Resort City which has been designed to offer exclusive leisure and hospitality to those who will come to settle and serve the overall Lamu Mega City. The City will take advantage of the Port location within Lamu City Metropolis with its extensive communication linkages.  Lamu Old Town is inscribed on the World Heritage List as “the oldest and best preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa”.  The town was founded in the 14th century and it contains many fine examples of Swahili architecture.  The town’s narrow streets remain unchanged, and in the markets and squares around the fort life moves at the same pace as it always has.  There are no vehicles on this island, and the donkey and the dhow remain the dominant form of transport. LAPSSET/LAMU PORT The Port Project, due to start this year is a huge infrastructure project that will have major implications on geopolitical investments in the wider East African region and will eventually extend to general and West Africa.  The project which will transform Kenya into a middle income country as envisaged in vision 2030 economic blue print is estimated to cost a whooping US$23 Billion. The new project will have a new modern port, refinery, pipeline linking Lamu with the oil fields of South Sudan, a high speed railway line to Juba in South Sudan onwards to Central Africa Republic, and finally Cameroon and a branch line to Ethiopia, a superhighway linking to Ethiopia and Sudan, an international airport and several resort cities or towns within Kenya.  The railway developments will also have a line to Uganda, Rwanda, DRC and Congo Brazzaville.  There will also be a line to serve the 80 million strong population of Ethiopia. The port, to be the largest on Africa continent will be able to handle Supper Post Panamax vessels, with a capacity of 8,000 teu (twenty-foot equivalent units) as opposed to 3,000 teu vessels that it is currently handling.  With 22 berths it will handle 35 million tons per year.
